Microsoft Unveils Dragon Copilot to Revolutionize Clinical Workflows with AI Voice Assistant for Healthcare

Microsoft has announced Dragon Copilot to revolutionize clinical workflows with AI voice assistant for healthcare. The first unified voice AI assistant designed to streamline clinical documentation, surface critical information, and automate administrative tasks.

The voice assistant integrates voice dictation capabilities of Dragon Medical One, a tool built by AI voice recognition company, Nuance, and the ambient listening capabilities of DAX copilot. Dragon Copilot enhances clinician well-being, optimizes efficiency, improves patient experiences, and drives financial impact.

Revolutionizing Clinical Workflows with AI-Voice Assistant

On Monday, Microsoft Corp. unveiled Dragon Copilot, a first-of-its-kind AI assistant for clinical workflows, bringing together the natural language dictation capabilities of DMO with the ambient listening technology of DAX. Fine-tuned with generative AI and healthcare-specific safeguards, Dragon Copilot is a part of Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare, built on a secure modern architecture that enables improved patient care and provider efficiency across healthcare settings.

Addressing Clinician Burnout with AI

Clinician burnout remains a pressing issue in the U.S., with rates dropping from 53% in 2023 to 48% in 2024, partly due to advancements in AI-driven technologies. However, with an aging population and persistent workforce shortages, healthcare systems are increasingly turning to AI to automate administrative tasks, enhance patient access to care, and enable faster clinical insights on a global scale.

“At Microsoft, we have long believed that AI has the incredible potential to free clinicians from much of the administrative burden in healthcare and enable them to refocus on taking care of patients,”  Joe Petro, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Health and Life Sciences Solutions and Platforms.

“With the launch of our new Dragon Copilot, we are introducing the first unified voice AI experience to the market, drawing on our decades-long expertise in provider wellness and clinical efficiency.”

“With Dragon Copilot, we’re not just enhancing how we work in the EHR — we’re tapping into a Microsoft-powered ecosystem where AI assistance extends across our organization, delivering a consistent and intelligent experience everywhere we work,” said Dr. R. Hal Baker, Senior VP and CIO of WellSpan Health.

AI-Powered Capabilities: Elevating Clinical Workflows

Dragon Copilot brings together the best of DMO’s speech recognition and DAX’s ambient AI technology, which has facilitated over 3 million ambient patient conversations across 600 healthcare organizations in just the past month. The AI-powered assistant is already delivering significant outcomes, with:

  • Five minutes saved per encounter
  • 70% of clinicians reporting reduced burnout and fatigue
  • 62% of clinicians stating they are less likely to leave their organization
  • 93% of patients experiencing improved care quality

Key Features of Dragon Copilot

Dragon Copilot provides an intelligent, speech-driven experience for clinicians and healthcare providers across various specialties. Key functionalities include:

Streamlining Documentation: Supports multilanguage ambient note creation, automated task management, personalized formatting, speech memos, AI-powered prompts, and more—all within a single, intuitive interface.
Surfacing Critical Information: Enables real-time medical information retrieval from trusted content sources.
Automating Administrative Tasks: Allows clinicians to automate key processes such as conversational orders, clinical evidence summaries, referral letters, and after-visit summaries in a centralized workspace.

Seamless Integration across Healthcare Settings

Designed to work across ambulatory care, inpatient settings, emergency departments, and more, Dragon Copilot provides fast, accurate, and secure speech-to-text capabilities to assist clinicians in navigating electronic health records (EHRs) and reducing administrative burdens.

Dragon Copilot will be generally available in the U.S. and Canada in May, with subsequent rollouts planned for the U.K., Germany, France, and the Netherlands. Microsoft is also expanding Dragon Medical’s reach to additional key markets worldwide.

“We recognize the administrative burden on clinicians and the pressing need for improved patient care access. The latest evolution of Dragon Copilot is a game-changer in alleviating these challenges,” said Glen Kearns, EVP and CIO of The Ottawa Hospital.

“We are excited to be among the first in Canada to leverage Microsoft’s ambient and generative AI technology.”
